BRICK WINDOW PAPER, MATTHIAS SCHAAREMAN

Matthias Schaareman ﴾born in 1986 in Arnhem﴿ creates paintings on paper in which the tension between two and three‐dimensional space is investigated. Inspired, among other things, by architecture from the interwar period, Matthias reintroduces shapes reminiscent of various architectural elements, including facades, window decorations, ornamental moldings, and tile patterns.

These elements are taken out of their original context and merged into a new image. Although the origin and context in which these forms were found remain visible, he takes the freedom to alter, deconstruct, and give them a new and autonomous form. He aims for an image that is not easily categorizable, and the original forms of the used elements may not be immediately recognizable. Often, the scale of what the works depict is not immediately clear because Matthias seeks to present images that invite exploration.

Matthias’ work often starts without a predefined plan. A gutter, a detail of a windowsill, or parts of everyday interior objects can be the starting point for a new piece. Once the initial form is established, the rest of the image evolves as a response.
